Children’s book illustration

Giovanni Manna was born in Florence in 1966.
He attended engraving courses in Florence and Bologna, iconographic painting courses in Bologna and illustration courses in Sarmede and Venice.
He has been working in the field of children’s books since 1995 and mainly uses the watercolour technique: he also creates works of art through the etching technique. He published over 80 books with several Italian and foreign publishing houses, among which are Rizzoli, Fabbri, Fatatrac, Mondadori, Salani, Piemme, Edizioni San Paolo, Messaggero di S. Antonio, C’era una volta, Cideb, EDB (Italy) and Creative Edition (USA), Barefoot Books (UK), Bohem Press (Zurigo), Grimm Press (Taipei), Tyrolia Verlag (Innsbruck): the original editions of his books have been translated into several languages.

In 2012, he was awarded the American Junior Library Guild. In 2003, he won the Italian Andersen Award for best illustrator of the year. In 1995, he won the 3rd prize and, in 1996, the 1st prize at the Città di Chioggia competition (sponsored by UNICEF); in 1996, he won the 2nd prize at the Scarpetta d’oro competition.
He took part in the Bratislava Biennial in 2011, 2003 and 2001, in the Sarmede International Illustration Festival (“The images of fantasy”) from 1996 to 2014: in 2014, he was a guest of honour at the Festival of Sarmede and presented a personal exhibition including one hundred illustrations; he also participated in the Bologna Book Fair from 1995 to 1999, in I colori del sacro (Diocesan Museum of Padua) in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011/12 and 2014; he exhibited his works at the Turin Book Fair in 2011, in Newcastle upon Tyne (“Tales for the telling”, 2000 and 2004), at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (New York, 1999-2000), at “Mat-ita, Matite Italiane” (Bologna Book Fair, 2000), at “The Italy picture book” Festival in Osaka and Tokyo (2001-2002) and in many other national festivals. In 2006, he started teaching watercolour painting in the basic and advanced courses of the International School of Illustration of Sarmede, where the International Illustration Exhibition ““Le immagini della fantasia” can be found.
